Abstract Heavy rainfall information is essential for environmental studies and water engineering. This study therefore aimed to adjust Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) equations for 247 locations in the Rio Grande do Sul (RS) using stationary rainfall series. Mann-Kendall’s test was applied to identify the temporal trends in the Annual Maximum Daily Rainfall (AMDR) series of 271 rain gauges in RS. The Kappa, Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Gumbel, two-parameters Log-Normal and three-parameters Log-Normal probabilistic distributions were adjusted to the AMDR series without significant temporal trend. The best distribution fit was given by Anderson-Darling’s test, so the AMDR was discretized up to 5 minutes. IDF equations coefficients were adjusted in RStudio, using Nash-Sutcliffe’s Coefficient and the Root-Mean-Square Error to evaluate them. In conclusion: the most suitable distributions for the AMDR were the multiparametric Kappa and GEV; the IDF equations coefficients adjustment was classified as “excellent”; coefficients a and b varied across the RS and are correlated with the AMDR and geographical positions; and the c and d coefficients were practically constant.

Resumo Informações sobre chuvas intensas são essenciais para estudos ambientais e engenharia de recursos hídricos. Assim, o estudo objetivou ajustar equações Intensidade-Duração-Frequências (IDF) de chuvas para 247 locais do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), utilizando séries estacionárias de chuva. Para identificar tendencias temporais significativas, o teste Mann-Kendall foi aplicado em 271 séries de Chuva Máxima Diária Annual (CMDA) do RS. As distribuições probabilisticas Kappa, GEV, Gumbel, Log-Normal 2 parâmetros e Log-Normal 2 parãmetros foram ajustadas às séries sem tendência de CMDA. Com as distribuições melhores ajustadas à cada série de CMDA, esta foi discretizada em intervalos de até 5 minutos. O ajuste dos coeficientes das equações IDF foi realizado no RStudio, utilizando o Coeficiente de Nash-Sutcliffe e a Raíz Quadrada do Erro Quadrático Médio para avaliá-lo. Em conclusão: as distribuições mais adequadas foram as multiparamétricas Kappa e GEV; o ajuste dos coeficientes da equação IDF foi classificado como “excelente”; os coeficientes a e b variam no RS e estão correlacionados com a magnitude da CMDA e sua localização; os coeficientes c e d foram praticamentes contantes.

Resumo Mudanças na precipitação e na temperatura do ar podem produzir diferentes impactos no regime hidrológico, causando colapso no abastecimento de água. Este estudo focaliza nos impactos das mudanças climáticas na bacia do Rio Verde (VRB), uma bacia hidrográfica de cabeceira no sudeste do Brasil, localizada em Minas Gerais. O modelo hidrológico Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) foi calibrado e validado na bacia do Rio Verde. O downscaling (Modelo de Clima Regional Eta, com resolução de 20 km) de três Modelos de Circulação Global (CanESM2, HadGEM2-ES e MIROC5) foram usados no VIC com dados históricos (1961-2005) e em três intervalos de tempo (2011- 2040, 2041-2070 e 2071-2099), nos cenários RCPs 4.5 e 8.5. Os cenários foram usados como entrada no modelo hidrológico após a correção do viés. O modelo hidrológico (VIC) apresentou desempenho estatístico satisfatório na calibração e validação, com CNS variando de 0,77 a 0,85 para as vazões diárias e mensais; no entanto, superestimou alguns fluxos de pico e subestimou os de recessão. A média do conjunto de modelos prevê aumentos da temperatura média mensal mínima e máxima no final do século. O Eta-CanESM2 indicou maiores temperaturas, principalmente para RCP8.5 no final do século, enquanto Eta-HadGEM2-ES apresentou a maior redução na precipitação para RCP4.5 no início do século e para RCP8.5 no final do século, impactando negativamente na evapotranspiração e vazão. Entre os Modelos Climáticos Regionais (MCRs), o Eta-MIROC5 apresentou pequenas alterações nos componentes do ciclo hidrológico. Este estudo sugere que Modelos de Circulação Global representam incertezas adicionais, que devem ser consideradas na avaliação do impacto das mudanças climáticas.

Abstract Changes in precipitation and air temperature may produce different impacts on the hydrological regime, compromising water supply. This study focuses on climate change impacts in the Verde River Basin (VRB), a tropical headwater basin in southeast Brazil, located in the state of Minas Gerais. The Variable Infiltration Capacity model (VIC) was calibrated and validated in the Verde River Basin. The downscaling (Eta Regional Climate Model, at 20-km resolution) of three Global Circulation Models (CanESM2, HadGEM2-ES and MIROC5) were used to drive the VIC for a historical baseline (1961-2005) and three time-slices (2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2099), under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios. The scenarios were used as input in the hydrological model after bias correction. The hydrological model (VIC) showed satisfactory statistical performance in calibration and validation, with CNS varying from 0.77 to 0.85 for daily and monthly discharges; however, it overestimated some peak flows and underestimated the recession flows. Multi-model ensemble means predict increases of the minimum and maximum monthly average temperature for the investigated area at the end of the century. The Eta-CanESM2 indicated greater warming, mainly for RCP8.5 at the end the century, whereas Eta-HadGEM2-ES showed higher reduction in the precipitation for RCP4.5 at the beginning of the century and for RCP8.5 at the end the century, negatively impacting the evapotranspiration and discharge. Among the Regional Climate Models (RCMs), the Eta-MIROC5 showed minor changes in the components of the hydrological cycle. This study suggests that Global Circulation Models represent an additional uncertainty, which should be accounted for in the climate change impact assessment.

Abstract Mathematical models have been widely used to quantify hydrological processes for various practical purposes. These models depend on geomorphological attributes which are derived from relief information represented by Digital Elevation Models (DEM). The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of relief information sources (ASTER, SRTM-30, SRTM-90, and TOPO) over geomorphological characterization of five Brazilian watersheds. Geoprocessing tools were applied for extraction of the following geomorphological attributes for each DEM: drainage area, perimeter, and watershed slope; length and slope of the main stream; total length of streams; bifurcation, stream length and stream area ratios; and length of the highest order stream. The differences in the values of attributes were calculated in relation to the reference DEM (TOPO). It was found that: i) slope of main stream and bifurcation ratio were the most sensitive parameters regarding the relief information source; ii) flat watersheds were more susceptible to altimetric errors; iii) ASTER did not adequately represent drainage networks for flat watersheds; and iv) the differences in the geomorphological attributes increased as drainage area decreased. The results indicate that DEM may exert influence on the use of hydrological models that depend on geomorphological attributes.

Resumo O bioma Cerrado brasileiro (BCB) está entre os 25 hotspots de biodiversidade identificados em todo o mundo, e abrange a área de recarga de importantes aqüíferos e rios da América do Sul. O aumento do desmatamento vem ameaçando a disponibilidade de água na região. A fim de auxiliar na gestão dos recursos hídricos da BCB, este estudo tem como objetivo modelar a vazão diária em uma bacia do Cerrado, utilizando duas abordagens: um modelo baseado em processo (Soil and Water Assessment Tool - SWAT) e um modelo orientado por dados (Artificial Neural Network - ANN). O desempenho dos modelos foi avaliado pelo coeficiente de Nash-Sutcliffe (NSE), coeficiente de determinação (R2) e curvas de duração de fluxo (FDC). Os resultados indicam que os modelos SWAT (NSE > 0,61; R2 > 0,68) e ANN (NSE > 0,91; R2 > 0,79) são ferramentas adequadas na modelagem diária de vazões da bacia estudada, sendo o modelo ANN o mais preciso. Com base no FDC, o modelo ANN também foi melhor do que o modelo SWAT para todas as frequências avaliadas. Assim, o modelo ANN é uma nova abordagem promissora para modelagem de fluxo diário nesta região. Além disso, os resultados deste estudo podem ajudar os gestores de recursos hídricos no planejamento e implementação de medidas adequadas de alocação e conservação de água no bioma Cerrado brasileiro.

Abstract The Brazilian Cerrado biome (BCB) is among 25 biodiversity hotspots identified worldwide, and covers the recharge area of important aquifers and rivers in South America. The increase in deforestation has been threatening water availability in this region. In order to assist in the water-resource management of the BCB, this study models the daily streamflow in a basin of the Cerrado, using two approaches: a process-based model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool - SWAT) and the data-driven model (Artificial Neural Network - ANN). The performance of the models was evaluated by the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE), coefficient of determination (R2) and flow-duration-curves (FDC). The results indicate that SWAT (NSE > 0.61; R2 > 0.68) and ANN (NSE > 0.91; R2 > 0.79) models are suitable tools in daily streamflow modeling of the studied basin, with the ANN model being the most accurate. Based on FDC, the ANN model was also better than the SWAT model for all frequencies evaluated. Thus, the ANN model is a promising new approach for daily streamflow modelling in this region. Moreover, the results of this study can help water-resource managers in planning and implementing appropriate water allocation and conservation measures in the Brazilian Cerrado biome.

Resumo O Modelo do Número da Curva do Serviço de Conservação do Solo é um modelo conceitual destinado a estimar a precipitação efetiva (ER). Esse modelo está embasado em um parâmetro - denominado Curve Number (CN), que é determinado a partir de informações sobre as características da bacia hidrográfica. O Método Padrão (M1) para determinar o CN é baseado em tabelas de solo e uso da terra, no entanto, alguns autores propuseram metodologias alternativas para definir o valor de CN de eventos monitorados de chuva-escoamento, como aqueles descritos por Hawkins (1993) (M2), Soulis and Valiantzas (2012) (M3) e Soulis and Valiantzas (2013) (M4). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o impacto da utilização desses métodos para determinação do parâmetro CN na estimativa da ER, tomando como referência quarenta eventos pluviométricos monitorados entre 2015 e 2018 na bacia do rio Cadeia, que possui características de Bioma Pampa. Os diferentes métodos avaliados para definição do parâmetro CN resultaram em desempenhos contrastantes no que diz respeito à estimativa de ER para CRW, como os seguintes achados: i) M1 deu valores de ER com pouca confiabilidade, principalmente devido à classificação das classes de teor de umidade antecedentes; ii) M3 apresentou os melhores resultados na determinação de ER, seguido de M2; e iii) os valores de ER estimados de acordo com o M4 diferiram dos observados, principalmente para eventos com menores profundidades de chuva.

Abstract The Soil Conservation Service Curve Number Model is a conceptual model intended for estimating effective rainfall (ER). This model is grounded in a parameter - referred to as Curve Number (CN), which is determined from information on the characteristics of the watershed. The Standard Method (M1) for determining the CN is based on soil and land-use tables; however, some authors have proposed alternative methodologies for defining the CN value from monitored rainfall-runoff events, such as those described by Hawkins (1993) (M2), Soulis and Valiantzas (2012) (M3), and Soulis and Valiantzas (2013) (M4). The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of using these methods for determination of the CN parameter on the estimation of ER, taking as reference forty rainfall-runoff events monitored between 2015 and 2018 in the Cadeia River Watershed, which has characteristics of the Pampa biome. The different methods assessed for definition of the CN parameter resulted in contrasting performances with respect to the estimation of ER for CRW, as the following findings: i) M1 gave ER values with little reliability, mainly due to the classification of antecedent moisture content classes; ii) M3 provided the best results in determining ER, followed by M2; and iii) the ER values estimated according to M4 differed from those observed, mainly for events with lower rainfall depths.

Resumo O bioma Cerrado brasileiro é a maior e mais rica savana tropical do mundo e está entre os 25 hotspots de biodiversidade identificados em todo o mundo. No entanto, o escasso monitoramento hidrológico, recorrente nesta região, tem gerado problemas na gestão dos recursos hídricos. A fim de fornecer ferramentas para a gestão adequada dos recursos hídricos na região do bioma Cerrado brasileiro, este trabalho desenvolve a regionalização das vazões máximas, médias e mínimas na bacia do rio Tocantins (287.405,5 km2), totalmente localizada no bioma Cerrado brasileiro. Os registros de vazão de 32 estações fluviométricas na bacia do rio Tocantins foram examinados usando o teste de Mann-Kendall e o método não paramétrico de homogeneidade hidrológica index-flood. Uma região homogênea foi identificada para a estimativa das vazões Qltm (vazão média de longo termo), Q90% (vazão igualada ou excedida em 90% do tempo), Q95% (vazão igualada ou excedida em 95% do tempo) e Q7,10 (vazão mínima anual das médias de 7 dias e tempo de retorno de 10 anos). Duas regiões homogêneas foram identificadas para a estimativa da vazão máxima anual e a distribuição de valor extremo generalizado foi encontrada para descrever a distribuição de eventos máximos apropriadamente dentro de ambas as regiões. Modelos regionais foram desenvolvidos para cada vazão de cada região e avaliados pela validação cruzada. Esses modelos podem ser usados para a estimativa de vazões máximas, médias e mínimas em bacias não medidas dentro da bacia do rio Tocantins, dentro dos limites de área identificados. Portanto, os resultados fornecidos neste artigo são ferramentas valiosas para a prática de gestores de recursos hídricos no bioma Cerrado brasileiro.

Abstract The Brazilian Cerrado biome is the largest and richest tropical savanna in the world and is among the 25 biodiversity hotspots identified worldwide. However, the lack of adequate hydrological monitoring in this region has led to problems in the management of water resources. In order to provide tools for the adequate management of water resources in the Brazilian Cerrado biome region, this paper develops the regionalization of maximum, mean and minimum streamflows in the Tocantins River Basin (287,405.5 km2), fully located in the Brazilian Cerrado biome. The streamflow records of 32 gauging stations in the Tocantins River Basin are examined using the Mann-Kendall test and the hydrological homogeneity non-parametric index-flood method. One homogeneous region was identified for the estimate of the streamflows Qltm (long-term mean streamflow), Q90% (streamflow with 90% of exceeding time), Q95% (streamflow with 95% of exceeding time) and Q7,10 (minimum annual streamflow over 7 days and return period of 10 years). Two homogeneous regions were identified for maximum annual streamflow estimation and the Generalized Extreme Value distribution is found to describe the distribution of maximus events appropriately within the both regions. Regional models were developed for each streamflow of each region and evaluated by cross-validation. These models can be used for the estimation of maximum, mean and minimum streamflows in ungauged basins within the Tocantins River Basin within the area boundaries identified. Therefore, the results provided in this paper are valuable tools for practicing water-resource managers in the Brazilian Cerrado biome.

RESUMO Períodos de seca prolongados têm impactado as florestas Atlânticas no sudeste do Brasil, demandando investigações para entender os efeitos destas condições estressantes em sua hidrologia. Este estudo objetivou avaliar as mudanças no balanço hídrico de um remanescente de floresta Atlântica semi-decidual e como ela responde à secas. O Índice Padronizado Precipitação-Evapotranspiração (SPEI) foi aplicado para identificar os períodos de seca (de 1961 a 2019) e suas severidades nas escalas de ano hidrológico e verão. Os impactos das secas na evapotranspiração real, na percolação potencial e no armazenamento de água no solo foram analisados por meio do Hydrus-1D, considerando a precipitação efetiva e a evapotranspiração potencial como entradas. As análises de erro (<10%) confirmaram a adequabilidade do Hydrus-1D na simulação da umidade do solo. Incertezas com relação à condutividade hidráulica saturada estão relacionadas à presença de caminhos preferenciais, os quais não são considerados na equação de Richards. A intensificação das secas acarretaram mudanças na hidrologia florestal, ativando respostas fisiológicas. Florestas Atlânticas semi-deciduais são adaptadas a períodos secos devido à suas espécies adaptadas e à ativação de mecanismos fisiológicos. No entanto, a floresta respondeu de maneira diferente considerando as escalas de seca. A intensificação das secas no verão aumentou a evapotranspiração e diminuiu a percolação potencial. A perda de folhas alterou a estrutura do dossel em um intervalo de dois anos em resposta à intensificação da seca no ano hidrológico. Alterações na hidrologia florestal ativam respostas fisiológicas (como a perda de folhas) em um processo atrasado após episódios de seca.

ABSTRACT Since prolonged droughts have impacted Atlantic forests in Southeastern Brazil, further investigations to understand the effects of such stressful conditions in their hydrological behavior are required. This study aimed to assess the changes in the water balance of a semi-deciduous Atlantic forest remnant and how the forest responds to droughts. The Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index was applied to identify droughts (from 1961 to 2019) and their severity in both the hydrological year and summer scales. Drought impacts on actual evapotranspiration, potential percolation, and soil water storage were assessed using Hydrus-1D, having net precipitation and potential evapotranspiration as inputs. Error analyses (< 10%) confirmed Hydrus-1D suitability for simulating soil moisture. Uncertainties regarding the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity are due to preferential flows, which are not accounted for in Richards’ equation. Drought intensification changed forest hydrology and triggered physiological responses to deal with it. Semi-deciduous Atlantic forests are adapted to dry conditions because of the existence of dry-affiliated species and the activation of physiological mechanisms. However, such adaptations responded differently regarding the drought scales. The intensification of summer droughts increased evapotranspiration and decreased the potential percolation. Leaf shedding changed the canopy structure in a two-year time lag as a response to the intensification of hydrological year droughts. Changes in forest hydrology are sudden and trigger physiological responses, such as leaf shedding, in a delayed process after droughts take place.

RESUMO Mundialmente, a degradação do solo devido à erosão hídrica tem sido um dos maiores problemas ambientais nas regiões tropicais, especialmente sob as severas condições dos Andes. Este estudo objetiva detalhar o risco do solo à erosão hídrica numa bacia hidrográfica produtora de água, localizada nos Andes colombianos (Bacia do rio Combeima), usando o modelo RUSLE e discutindo como reduzir os processos erosivos nas condições ambientais da região (forte declividade, variabilidade climática, diferentes classes e propriedades de solos, e usos da terra). O modelo RUSLE foi aplicado com auxílio de SIG para estimar as taxas de erosão atual e potencial na bacia a partir de sua calibração para regiões montanhosas, identificando áreas mais vulneráveis à erosão hídrica. A taxa de erosão atual em 50,5% da área total da bacia é maior que 25 t ha-1 ano-1, o que significa que a bacia apresenta um risco muito alto à erosão hídrica, com 30,4% de sua área com risco severo (> 100 t ha-1 ano-1). Foi possível concluir que os atuais usos da terra e os sistemas de manejo do solo não têm sido efetivos na redução da erosão hídrica, principalmente em áreas com topografia muito declivosa, demonstrando a necessidade de planejamento sustentável para melhor controlar as perdas de solo, água, carbono orgânico, nutrientes e outros elementos (não-nutrientes) nesta região dos Andes tropicais.

ABSTRACT Globally, soil degradation by water erosion has become one of the major environmental problems in tropical regions, especially under the severe environmental conditions of the Andes. This study aims to detail the soil risk to degradation by water erosion in a water producer basin located in the Tropical Colombian Andes (Combeima River basin), applying the RUSLE model, discussing how to minimize the erosion processes under its environmental conditions (steep slope, climatic variability, soil classes and properties diversity, and alternative land uses). RUSLE was applied with the support of GIS to estimate current and potential risk to soil erosion in the basin, allowing the identification of areas more prone to degradation. It was found that currently, 50.5% of the basin’s area presents, on average, annual soil losses greater than 25 Mg ha-1 yr-1, meaning a very high risk to water erosion, with 30.4% showing a severe risk (> 100 Mg ha-1 yr-1). It was possible to conclude that the current land uses and soil management systems have not been effective in mitigating soil erosion, mainly when situated in steep topography. Therefore, it is necessary sustainable planning for the conservation of soil, water, organic carbon, plant nutrients, and other elements (not-nutrients) in this tropical Andes region.

RESUMO Apesar da importância da água na Terra, pouco se conhece sobre sua dinâmica no solo e, consequentemente, poucas são as informações sobre sua preservação em quantidade e qualidade. Diante disso, objetivou-se, neste trabalho, gerar informações que dessem subsídio ao entendimento da dinâmica da água no solo em áreas de recarga de nascentes. Para tanto, realizou-se o monitoramento da vazão e da precipitação nas áreas de recarga de duas pertencentes, verificando a relação existente entre os atributos físico-hídricos do solo intimamente relacionados à recarga subterrânea, além das características pedológicas, do uso do solo, da cobertura vegetal e da declividade. Os resultados mostraram que a sinalização de que os Cambissolos apresentam maior capacidade de infiltração e, consequentemente, recarga, em relação aos Latossolos, não se confirmou neste trabalho. Mesmo havendo uma grande discrepância nas classes de relevo entre as áreas de recarga das nascentes, esse efeito não foi suficiente para reduzir o processo de recarga. As condições de uso do solo não foram substancialmente diferentes a ponto de influenciar o processo de infiltração. O grande diferencial entre as áreas de recarga das nascentes em relação à capacidade de gerar deflúvio base se explica pelos atributos físico-hídricos e pelo índice pluviométrico, que, neste caso, resultaram em uma associação mais efetiva na área da nascente L1. A elevada capacidade de retenção de água no Latossolo, reflexo da maior microporosidade associada a sua maior profundidade, é uma característica desfavorável para o processo de recarga quando comparado ao Cambissolo, que tem horizonte B incipiente e menores profundidades.

ABSTRACT Despite the importance of water on earth, little is known about its dynamics in the soil, and consequently, there is little information about its preservation in quantity and quality. Therefore, the objective of this research was to generate information to support the understanding of water dynamics in soil springs in recharge areas. Thus, we carried out monitoring flow and precipitation in the areas of two belonging clearance, verifying the relationship between the physical and water attributes of the soil closely related to groundwater recharge, in addition to soil characteristics, land use, cover vegetation and slope. The results showed that the signaling that Cambisoils have higher infiltration capacity and consequently clearance in relation to Latosols was not confirmed in this study. Even though there is a large discrepancy in relief classes between the recharge areas of springs, this effect was not sufficient to reduce the recharge process. Land use conditions were not substantially different as to influencing the infiltration process. The big difference between the recharge areas of the springs on the ability to generate runoff base is explained by physical-water attributes and rainfall, which in this case resulted in a more effective association in the area of spring L1. The higher water retention capacity of the Oxisol, reflecting the higher microporosity associated with its greater depth, is an unfavorable feature for the recharge process, when compared to Inceptisol, which has an incipient B horizon and lower depths.

RESUMO A seca meteorológica é um fenômeno natural caracterizado por precipitações abaixo da média, com relação ao valor esperado ou normal, que podem afectar vários sectores econômicos e levar a um período com vazões inadequadas para usos estabelecidos (seca hidrológica). Foi aplicado o Índice de Precipitação Padronizado (SPI) e o Índice de Escoamento Padronizado (SSI) para identificar a ocorrência e a intensidade das secas na bacia hidrográfica do rio Doce (DRB), Sudeste do Brasil. Para isso, foram seleccionadas 71 estações pluviométricas e uma estação de vazão com séries históricas mensais de 30 anos (1987 a 2017). O SPI e o SSI foram calculados para o ano hidrológico (outubro-setembro) e para as estações do ano (primavera, verão, outono e inverno). O mapeamento do SPI foi realizado por procedimentos geoestatísticos. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foi calculado para analisar a influência da meteorologia na seca hidrológica. Os principais eventos meteorológicos de seca foram observados nos anos hidrológicos de 1994/95, 2000/01 e em um período recente e consecutivo de quatro anos hidrológicos (2013-2017), principalmente influenciados por eventos na primavera e verão e, em menor escala, no outono. Foi observada a influência da seca meteorológica sobre a hidrológica em escala anual e sazonal, exceto no inverno, em que a baixa pluviosidade não influenciou a vazão.

ABSTRACT Meteorological drought is a natural hazard characterized as below-average precipitation from expected or normal that can affect various economic sectors, and lead to period with inadequate streamflow for established uses of the water (hydrological drought). We aimed to apply the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) to identify the occurrence and the intensity of droughts in Doce River Basin (DRB), Southeastern Brazil. For this purpose, 71 rain gauge stations and one streamflow station were selected with 30-year monthly historical series (1987 to 2017). The SPI and SSI were calculated for the hydrological year (October-September) and the seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter). SPI mapping was performed by geostatistical procedures. Pearson's coefficient was calculated to analyze the influence of meteorological on hydrological drought. The main meteorological drought events, observed in the hydrological years of 1994/95, 2000/01, and a recent and consecutive period of four hydrological years (2013-2017), were mainly influenced by events in spring and summer and, to a lesser extent, in fall. It was observed the influence of the meteorological drought on the hydrological drought on an annual and seasonal scale, except winter, where low precipitation does not influence in the streamflow.

ABSTRACT Hydrosedimentological modeling is a useful tool to predict the water dynamic in a basin and for water resources management. This study aimed to i) evaluate the ability of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to model sediment load and continuous monthly streamflow in the Mortes River Basin (MRB) in Southeastern Brazil; ii) estimate the sediment yield spatially distributed by sub-basins; iii) estimate the sediment load export to the Funil Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir (FHPP), located in the MRB outlet. For the sensitivity analysis, calibration, and uncertainty analysis of the model, a semi-automatic calibration in SWAT-CUP version 5.1.6 software with the “Sequential Uncertainty Fitting” algorithm was used. To evaluate the ability of SWAT to reproduce the continuous MRB monthly streamflow and sediment load, statistical indexes, and graphical analyses were used to compare the simulated and observed data. For the sediment evaluation, a spatial and temporal comparison of sediment yield maps was used as well as the sediment yield observed in sub-basins, aiming to identify the areas with a more significant contribution to the sediment generation in the basin. The results demonstrated that SWAT performed satisfactorily in simulating both monthly sediment load and streamflow. For discharge calibration, 99 % of the measured data were bracketed by the 95 % prediction uncertainty (95PPU), and for validation, 97 % of the data were bracketed by the 95PPU, which indicates proper bracketing of the measured data within model prediction uncertainty. Uncertainty analysis indicated that 95PPU could capture 78 % of the sediment loads measured during the calibration and 72 % of the measured data during the validation period at MRB. The hydrologic response unit with pasture and Argissolos (Ultisols), Neossolos Litólicos (Entisols), and Cambissolos (Inceptisols) combined with undulated relief were the main areas responsible for the highest sediment contributions. The sediment load delivered to the reservoir from its filling 2002 to 2015 was estimated in 6,682,704 m3 (16,706,761 Mg) (density of 2.5-Mg m-3) which value corresponded to 2.6 % of storage capacity (water plus sediment) in 14 years. These results are strategic since to become feasible identifying priority areas for soil and water conservation practices as well as useful information for water resources planning and management in the studied basin.

Resumo Vazões máximas e mínimas são fundamentais para a gestão dos recursos hídricos, especialmente para outorga de uso da água. Entretanto, a falta de monitoramento e a escassez de dados de vazão são fatores limitantes para tais estudos. Para contornar tal dificuldade, uma das ferramentas mais utilizadas é a regionalização de vazões. O objetivo neste estudo foi desenvolver modelos de regionalização para vazões máximas e mínimas de referênciapara a bacia hidrográfica do Rio das Mortes (MRB) (Unidade de Planejamento e Gestão dos Recursos Hídricos - GD2), sul do estado de Minas Gerais. As séries históricas de vazão de longo termo utilizadas foram disponibilizada pela Agência Nacional das Águas (ANA). Uma análise exploratório preliminar foi realizada, bem como a análise da estacionariedade das séries por meio do teste de tendências de Mann-Kendall. As Funções Densidade de Probabilidade (PDFs) com diferentes números de parâmetros foram utilizadas para estimar as vazões mínimas e máximas associadas a diferentes tempos de retorno e a performance foi avaliada por meio do teste de Anderson-Darling. A Generalized Extreme Values e Wakeby foram as distribuições mais apropriadas para vazões máximas e mínimas, respectivamente. O modelo de regressão para vazões foi ajustado utilizando como variável independente a área de drenagem das estações fluviométricas, sendo que os coeficientes de determinação obtidos foram superiores a 0,90. Desta forma, os modelos de regionalização demonstraram uma boa performance e são uma ferramenta potencial para ser utilizada na gestão dos recursos hídricos.

Abstract Maximum and minimum streamflow are fundamental for water resource management, especially for water rights. However, lack of monitoring and scarce streamflow data limit such studies. Streamflow regionalization is a useful tool to overcome these limitations. The study developed models for regionalization of the maximum and minimum reference streamflows for the Mortes River Basin (MRB) (Water Resources Planning and Management Unit - GD2), Southern Minas Gerais State. The study used long-term streamflow historical series provided by the Brazilian National Water Agency (ANA). Previous exploratory analysis was performed, and it was observed that the streamflow series are stationary according to the Mann-Kendall test. The estimation of the streamflow for different return periods (RP) was performed by fitting Probability Density Functions (PDFs) that were tested by the Anderson-Darling (AD) test. The Generalized Extreme Values (GEV) and Wakeby were the most appropriate PDFs for maximum and minimum streamflows, respectively. The streamflow models were fitted using a power regression procedure, considering the drainage area of the watersheds as inputs. The fittings reached the coefficient of determination (R2) greater than 0.90. Thus, the streamflow regionalization models demonstrated good performance and are a potential tool to be used for water resource management in the studied basin.

Resumo Previsões de vazão bem-sucedidas dependem de uma adequada avaliação de desempenho do modelo hidrológico. Neste estudo, as respostas hidrológicas foram comparadas usando dois modelos hidrológicos, físico-baseados e semi-distribuidos, Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) e Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), utilizando dados de entrada da bacia hidrográfica do rio Verde, localizada ao sul do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Este é um estudo de uma das mais importantes regiões hidrográficas de cabeceiras do Brasil (Serra da Mantiqueira). Ambos os modelos foram adequados para simulação da vazão, sendo os valores de R2 (coeficiente de determinação) e de NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe) superiores a 0,8, NSELog superiores a 0.35 (Eficiência Nash-Sutcliffe do logarítimico dos valores de vazão) e PBIAS (desvio percentual) menor que 25%. A integração da avaliação de desempenho dos modelos SWAT e VIC pode ser útil em diferentes estudos de avaliação dos recursos hídricos. Portanto, a partir deste estudo mais investigações devem ser conduzidas usando vários modelos hidrológicos e cenários de mudanças climáticas e de uso e cobertura da terra, na região.

Abstract Successful streamflow forecasts depend on an adequate performance evaluation of the hydrological model. In this study, the hydrological responses were compared using two hydrological models, physic-based and semi-distributed, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC), using input data from the Verde River Watershed, located in the Minas Gerais state in southern Brazil. This is a study of one of the most important headwater watershed regions of Brazil (Mantiqueira Range). Both models were suitable for streamflow simulation, with values of R2 (determination coefficient) and NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe) higher than 0.8, NSELog higher than 0.35 (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency of the logarithmic values of discharge) and PBIAS (percentage deviation) less than 25%. The integration of SWAT and VIC models can be useful in different water-resource assessment studies. Therefore, based upon this study further investigations should be conducted using various hydrological models and climate, land-use and land-cover changes scenarios in the region.

ABSTRACT. This study was carried out in an Atlantic forest remnant in Southeastern Brazil and aimed to spatially model the soil water content (SWC) and net precipitation (NP) on a monthly time scale and to assess the spatial behavior of these hydrological variables in the different seasons. NP is defined by summing throughfall and stemflow, which have been collected after each rain event and accumulated monthly. Soil moisture measurements were carried out monthly up to a depth of 1.00 m and then integrated to obtain the SWC. The exponential semivariogram model was fitted for both hydrological variables, and the goodness-of-fit was assessed by a cross-validation procedure, spatial dependence degree (SDD) and spatial dependence index (SDI). This model provided adequate performance for SWC and NP mapping according to the cross-validation statistics. Based on the SDD, both variables have been classified as a ‘strong spatial dependence structure’. Nevertheless, when the SDI was assessed, NP showed less spatial dependence, while the SWC maintained almost the same performance. Kriging maps pictured the regional climate seasonality due to higher values of both variables in spring and summer than in autumn and winter seasons. However, correlations between NP and SWC are not expressive in the studied period.

Resumo A compreensão das características físicas da chuva e sua interação com a paisagem possibilita o desenvolvimento de modelos matemáticos mais condizentes com a realidade além de auxiliar no planejamento eficiente de obras e práticas agrícolas. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar a precipitação interna de um povoamento de Eucalyptus no município de Lavras, Minas Gerais, associado a padrões hidrológicos e potencial erosivo. Para individualização dos eventos de precipitação interna foram adotados os intervalos de 3 e 6 horas entre chuvas. Para cada abordagem foi realizada a classificação do padrão hidrológico da precipitação, incidente e interna, e, associados a estes, as características das chuvas: lâmina precipitada, tempo de duração, energia cinética, intensidades média e máxima, e erosividade. A precipitação interna no povoamento de eucalipto representou 79,2% da precipitação externa. A precipitação interna mostrou-se 36,4% menos erosiva do que a precipitação externa, na qual o padrão avançado foi identificado como predominante na série analisada em ambas as metodologias de individualização dos eventos.

Abstract The understanding of rainfall physical characteristics and their interaction with the landscape allow the development of more feasible mathematical models to be applied on the planning of agricultural conservation practices. However, only a few studies have tried to characterize the throughfall in planted forests, like eucalyptus plantation. The objective of this study was to characterize the throughfall behavior under Eucalyptus canopy, at Lavras county region, southern Minas Gerais state, relating it to the hydrology pattern and erosive potential of the rainfall. For that, rainfall events were individualized by means of two criteria: 6 and 3 hours between the events, consecutively. For each one of the approaches, both gross precipitation and throughfall were classified in terms of the rainfall hydrology pattern linked to the following rainfall features: rainfall depth, rainfall duration, kinetic energy, average and maximum intensities and erosivity. On average, throughfall events have corresponded to 79.2% of the gross precipitation. In addition, it has showed to be 36.4% less erosive than gross precipitation. The advanced rainfall pattern was identified as predominant considering both methodologies for rainfall events individualization.
